5 NPA rebels killed, 4 others captured
FIVE New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed while four others were captured following an encounter with security forces on Thursday afternoon, May 12, in a remote village in Cagayan Valley.
Initial reports reaching the PNP central operations center in Camp Crame said the encounter between police forces and NPA rebels took place at around 3:30 p.m. in Barangay Lakambini, Tuao, Cagayan.
Reports said that joint elements of the 2nd Regional Public Safety Battalion (RSPB), Regional Intelligence and Cagayan Provincial Police office were on patrol at the said village when it chanced upon unknown number of rebels.
A firefight quickly ensued that resulted to the killing of five rebels and the capture of four others – three of them wounded.
Two policemen were also wounded in the encounter, which lasted for 45 minutes. They were brought to the St. Paul Hospital in Tuguegarao City for medical treatment.
The police forces were able to recover eight high-powered and three low-powered firearms from the encounter site.
A contingent of PNP Special Action Force (SAF) and army troopers were called in at the said area for pursuit and blocking operations against the rebels that fled in different directions. Anthony Vargas
