Army trooper, civilian killed in rebel attack in Sorsogon
MANILA, Philippines – An army soldier and a civilian were killed in an ambush staged by three members of the New People’s Army (NPA), Friday morning in a remote village in Sorsogon, military reports said.
Initial reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo, the military general headquarters in Manila identified the ambush victims as Pfc Efren Salcedo of the army’s 49th Infantry Battalion (IB) and Resurection Mendones.
The reports said the attack took place at around 8:45 am along the national road in Brgy. Macawayan in Irosin town in Sorsogon while the two victims along with several others were on board a passenger jeep.
Salcedo, who had just came from a disaster response duty, along with family were on their way to a resort to celebrate the birthday of his two-year old when they were attacked by three NPA rebels, the reports said.
The reports added that several witnesses were able to identify one of the gunmen as Richard Galos, 25-years old, a resident of Brgy, Macawayan and said to be a leader of an NPA group based in Sorsogon.
Salcedo and Mendones sustained several gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies and were rushed to the Irosin District Hospital were they are declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.
