Laylo keeps lead in Asian Zonal
GRANDMASTER Darwin Laylo halved the point with compatriot GM Mark Paragua in the fifth round to stay on top of the 2011 Asian Zone 3.3 chess championships at the Tagaytay International Convention Center on Friday, May 27.
Laylo raised his total to 4.5 points, half-point ahead of compatriot GM Eugene Torre and top seed GM Zhang Zhong of Singapore.
Torre posted his fourth straight win at the expense of FM Nguyen Doc Hoa of Vietnam while Zhang outplayed GM Nguyen Anh Dung also of Vietnam.
Paragua remained within striking distance at 3.5 points along with Vietnamese GM Cao Sang, who crushed Gunbayar Myagmarsuren of Mongolia in the fifth round.
Also with 3.5 points were GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia and International Masters Go Wei Ming of Singapore and Richard Bitoon.
Megaranto and Bitoon agreed to a draw while Go split the point with IM Oliver Barbosa.
In women’s play, WGM Irine Kharisma Sukandar of Indonesia nipped WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Vietnam to retain the lead with 4.5 points. The winner of the women’s division will advance to the Women’s World Championship slated late this year. Liberty Icao
