GM Wesley off to good start in AAI GM Chess Tournament
FILIPINO Grandmaster (GM) Wesley Barbasa So (2667) off to a blazing start at the start of the AAI (Airports Authority of India) Grandmasters Chess Tournament in New Delhi, India, Wednesday night.
The 17-year-old Bacoor, Cavite whiz kid sent here by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) President/Chairman Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., defeated Indian GM Krishnan Sasikiran (2676) after 37 moves of Sicilian defense, Ritzer Rauzer Attack variation using the advantageous white pieces.
In other matches saw, GM Viktor Laznicka (2681) of Czech Republic routed women’s world champion GM Hou Yifan (2612) of China after 65 moves of caro-kann defense while GM Fabiano Caruana (2714) of Italy
toppled GM Parimarjan Negi (2622) of India 49 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening.
In the second round, So will square off with Laznicka, Caruana opposite Sasikiran and Negi versus Hou.
This will be India’s first ever Category 17 chess tournament with a unique group of six grandmasters playing in a double round robin event. The tournament will offer total prize money worth US $ 24,500.
The winner takes $ 8,000, while the runner-up will receive $ 6,000.
The purse for the next four finishers will be $ 4,000, $ 3,000, $2,000 and $ 1,500.
