Laylo tops Pichay Cup
FORMER World Cup campaigner Grandmaster Darwin Laylo halved the point with Chinese GM Wen Yang in the final round to rule the Chairman Prospero Pichay Cup Chess Championships on Wednesday, June 8, at the Travelers Hotel in Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Olongapo City.
Laylo finished the 10-round Swiss System tournament with 7.5 points on six wins, three draws and one loss. Wen and another Chinese GM Li Shilong also wound up with 7.5 points, but Laylo captured the championship trophy because of superior tiebreak points.
“Hindi ko na pinilit y’ung last game ko. Nanigurado na lang ako kasi alam ko in case of tie mas mataas ang tiebreak points ko,” said Laylo, who lost to Li in the penultimate round.
Li also agreed to a truce with GM David Arutinian of Georgia.
Sharing fourth to 10th places with 7.0 points were Arutinian, GM Xu Jun, Lu Shanglei, Xiu Deshun and Ma Qun of China and GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia. Liberty Icao
