Phil Younghusband talunan at humagulgol sa ‘Celebrity Duets’
TRUE to his nature as a sportsman, British-Filipino Phil Younghusband is as aggressive as they come. “I am very, very competitive. I hate losing. If we’re going home, I like to be first to the house. I like to be first to the door. (In) everything, I love to win… probably one of the hardest feelings for me especially (is) losing a game.”
The young athlete admits he takes losing a game quite hard but fortunately for him, he does not need to wallow in it because he has a formidable support system also known as his family and friends. “They are always there to uplift my spirit and keep me grounded,” he says of his loved ones. To get himself out of frustration, he also likes to sing “Win” by Brian McKnight or recite “If” by Rudyard Kipling.
Naniniwala kami sa mga sinabi ni Phil dahil kung inyo pang natatandaan during the reality TV sa Celebrity Duets of GMA-7 a few years back of which he was a contestant ay umiyak as in humagulgol talaga siya sa madla sa nasabing reality show nung matalo siya.
Hindi pa siya masyadong kilala noon kaya hindi gaanong nagmarka ang kanyang participation sa nasabing programa.
Ibang Phil Younghusband na siya ngayon. Today, Phil is not just playing for the Philippines on the field, he is spreading the football passion and sparking the football fever in a country, previously interested only in basketball and boxing.
One way he’s doing that is through the Younghusband Football Academy, co-founded with his older brother and fellow footballer, James. “The academy started in 2010,” he shares. “We usually go to different provinces, different places trying to promote football. With the (recent) success of the Philippine team, interest has grown dramatically.”
Their summer program attracted about 170 students—boys, girls, four-year-olds, teenagers, adults—all wanting to learn football from these young yet experienced athletes. “We have people from Pangasinan coming in just to (play in) Alabang, it’s amazing how dedicated some of these people are.”
Phil adds that inspiring the youth to be the best that they can be is part of his personal advocacy. He believes that every individual, celebrity or not, have the power to make a positive contribution to his own growth and of course, to others.
That’s why he also looks forward to visiting different parts of the country with VitPower. The program, according to him, serves as a good opportunity to get to know more of his fellow Filipinos, and in a way, inspire them to succeed in whatever they do.
