So bows to Czech GM

FILIPINO Grandmaster (GM) Wesley Barbasa So (2267) bowed to Czech Republic GM Viktor Laznicka in Thursday’s 2nd round to lose his to lose his grip of the lead in the AAI (Airports Authority of India) Grandmasters ChessTournament in New Delhi, India.

The 17-year-old Bacoor, Cavite whiz kid was yielded to Laznicka after 39 moves of
Nimzo-Indian defense.

Other matches saw, GM Fabiano Caruana (2714) of Italy trounced GM Krishnan Sasikiran (2676) of India after 45 moves of Caro-Kann defense while GM Parimarjan Negi (2622) of India beat GM Hou Yifan (2612) of  China after 32 moves of Sicilian defense, Dragon variation.

Interestingly,  Laznicka, Caruana and Negi, played the advantageous white pieces. After two rounds of play of this six players field, double round-robin format, Laznicka and Caruana, both tallied 2.0 points for first place.

So and Negi tallied 1.0 point for 3rd and 4th place while Sasikiran and Hou remains scoreless at cellar dwellar.

In the third round,  So meets Negi,  Hou faces Caruana while Sasikiran battles Laznicka.

This will be India’s first ever Category 17 chess tournament with a unique group of six grandmasters playing in a double round robin event. The tournament will offer total prize money worth US $ 24,500.

The winner takes $ 8,000, while the runner-up will receive $ 6,000. The purse for the next four finishers will be $ 4,000, $ 3,000, $2,000 and $ 1,500.
