Saan nagkaiba?: Nora mas magandang hangaan from a distance, Vilma mas madaling abutin!
Sa totoo, I was only in high school when I became a dyed-in-the-wool Noranian.
My late father indulged my blind idolatry for the superstar to the point that he bought me a life-size portrait of Ms. Aunor that he placed strategically in my room.
Funny but it’s true. Para siyang santang hinahaplos-haplos ko every time I would wake up in the morning and concomitantly, when I retire in the evening.
My mom, on the other hand was not half as supportive. “Tao lang ‘yan,” she would admonish me when she would catch me looking at my idol’s life-sized photo. “It’s not a healthy thing, my son, to be treating her like a demi-god when she’s a human being like you and I.”
Anyway, I went to Manila way back in the 80s to look for my place in the sun and in a way, to pursue my childhood fantasy of becoming an entertainment writer like my idols Baby K. Jimenez, Billy Balbastro and Alfie Lorenzo.
To make a long story short, I met Ms. Aunor, through the intercession of the late Ate Luds Carvajal who was popularly known as Inday Badiday, at her then super-fab P. Guevarra mansion in San Juan.
Honestly, I was appalled when I first saw Nora in person looking very much different from what I always envisioned her to be. Hakhakhak!
She was outfitted in simple t-shirt and faded maong pants and donning a pair of rubber shoes that were so small, these might as well be worn by a kid of ten or eleven years old. Hakhakhak!
But when I came back in the evening of the same day, I was again stunned for she was already the Nora Aunor of my fantasy.
Made-up to perfection, her cheekbones highlighted with rogue that was applied just right and was wearing a dramatic all black outfit that highlighted her brown complexion and becoming facial features.
Sadly though, I could sense that she was kind of cold and not that easy to penetrate.
Inasmuch as she gave me her phone number (‘Mas mabuti ngayon, kuya, dahil di pa ako masyadong busy,’ she told us in earnest.), I wasn’t able to push through with my intention, for pinning her down for an interview then was tantamount to asking for the moon. Hahahaha! How naive could I possibly be. Hakhakhak!
Anyway, I never stopped becoming a fan. I always made it a point to watch her movies, enjoy her moments of triumphs vicariously, and practically slugged it out when other people would belittle her musicality or put her down in earnest.
Anyhow, I had an encounter with her again when she was staying then at her rented place in Broadcast city sometime in 1992 when my friend Ate Fely Igmat asked me to keep her company.
As usual, she was nice to Ate Fely but no recognition whatsoever could be gleaned from her expressive pair of eyes on my direction.
That was the time when I told her about my pent-up emotions and opened up the floodgates of despair and disenchantment that I felt right that very moment.
But to no avail.
To no avail daw, o! Hakhakhak!
She was still cold and seemingly not aware of my existence when we met again at GMA Supershow to get my most popular writer award for the defunct Hot Stars tabloid.
Anyhow, just the other night, our path would cross again when we attendend Gov. ER Ejercito’s presscon for their epic movie El Presidente.
As usual, the superstar went out of her way to kiss, greet and hug the entertain- ment press in attendance that she supposedly missed. Hahahahaha!
But predictably so, she didn’t linger one bit on our table when she passed our way and went to other tables nonchalantly without a trace of recognition on her slight -ly made-up face.
Di na kami nagtaka.
Ganon naman talaga siya at wala na kaming naramdaman ni katiting na pagtatampo this time dahil we’ve already shifted our love and loyalty to the star for all seasons Ms. Vilma Santos.
And speaking of Ate Vi, late 80s palang ay napabilib na niya kami sa kanyang sense of fairness when we wrote a series of explosively denigrating and exceedingly biting column items about her. But far from losing her cool and becoming vindictive and caustic when we inadvertently met at the press con of her Regal movie that time, she was indeed the paradigm of sweetness and understanding as she explained her side of the story.
Tongue-tied talaga kami and was red of face because she did not cheapen herself by bombarding us with uncouth tirade and cavalier words, she chose to kill us with kindness instead.
Many years after that, we received an invitation from her and it was really touching in the sense that I was the only Noranian present.
Na-appreciate pala ni Ate Vi ang mga nasusulat namin innocently praising her good traits along with her unfading freshness and beauty. Hahahahaha!
But what totally floored us was, when we were still a part of Juicy (the rating one, huh? not the resounding flop version that’s presently being anchored by Fermi- nata who’s veritably plastic, the viewers are avoiding her like the plague..Hakhakhak!) and we went to Batangas interview her.
You could imagine how surprised we were when Ate Vi asked halfway of their inter- view if we, supposedly, would not have our chance to have an interview on cam with her, too.
Shakira, di ba naman? Pero ‘yan nga si Ate Vi, sugar and spice and everything nice all these years.
Hindi man kami madalas nagkikita, it makes me happy to feel that kind of caring and sincerity that she indubitably radiates when we would meet once in a rare while.
Hakhakhak!
Kunsabagay, utakan lang naman ‘yan.
Why spend nga naman when you have sponsors who are dying to do it for you, di ba? Hakhakhak!
Wise guy, this young hunk Alden. Hakhakhak!
Anyway, still on Alden, marami ang nakapupunang ang gagwapo ng new breed of young actors ngayon ng GMA.
“Gud day, Pete,” our texter intones.
“Nasa rating thread #649 at Comment and Suggestion Thread #61.
“I-print mo at isulat mo sa columns mo.”
Hahahahaha!
I wear mo most of the time. Hahahahahahahahaha!
Period. Ayoko ng tsakaaaaa!
Bakekang ang ina pero gandara ang anak
HAHAHA!
Imagine, kung ano’ng ginanda-ganda niya, siya namang tsinaka ng kanyang ermats who happens to have an impairments.
Hakhakhak!
Dati-rati, and this was the time when they were still living in Tondo, Manila, oras na umuwi na ang anak nito from her taping sessions, asking galore raw agad ang madir ng 2k at go na sa #168 shopping Center. Hakhakhak!
Carry n’yo ‘yan?

Adios. Mabalos. I always need you, Nong!
