Matute is NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week
FIL-AM hotshot Nate Matute played the best game of his life for Jose Rizal University to stun San Beda College.
With his heroic effort to keep the Heavy Bombers in the hunt for the last Final Four berth of the 87th NCAA basketball tournament, Matute clinched the ACCEL/3XVI NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week award presented by Gatorade.
Matute unloaded 12 of his 15 points from the three-point area in JRU’s shocking 76-65 victory over the Red Lions.
“It feels good to beat San Beda after a long while. I’m very happy. We have better ball movement and we played good defense,” said Matute.
The Heavy Bombers raced to a 19-point lead and cooled down a late Red Lions rally down the stretch with Matute draining critical shots beyond the arc.
Jose Rizal is now in sixth place with 5-9 record alongside Lyceum, trailing only a game behind Mapua (6-8) in the race for the last semifinals spot.
San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva and Ronald Pascual, who have won the weekly plum sponsored by ACCEL and 3XVI and backed by Gatorade twice this year, came close to snaring their third with equally impressive efforts last week. Elech Dawa
