Media chess tilt unfolds tomorrow

FORMER Lyceum chess team stalwart Elech Dawa is expected to dominate the 1-ProDem Press Freedom Cup as it unfolds tomorrow (September 25) at the National Press Club (NPC) canteen.

The first round starts at 10 a.m.

Dawa, a sportswriter from Remate, used to be the board 2 player of the Pirates behind National Master Ali Branzuela in the late ’90s.

The one-day tournament sponsored by the 1st Philippine Pro-Democracy Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the NPC and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) will use the Swiss System format with 25-minute time control.

The chief arbiter will be NM Marlon Bernardino, a sportswriter himself writing for several national and provincial newspapers.

The top five players and category winners will receive cash prizes and gift certificates.
