Appleton retains US Open title
DARREN Appleton of Great Britain defeated Shawn Putnam of the USA, 13-6, in the finals to successfully retain the title at the conclusion of 36th annual US Open 9-Ball Championships at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA on Sunday (October 23).
Appleton is the third player in U.S. Open 9-Ball history to claim back-to-back titles since Mika Immonen of Finland in 2008-2009 and Nick Varner of the USA in 1989-1990.
This year, 251 players representing over 30 countries arrived to vie for the most prestigious professional billiard title on U.S. soil.
In the 2010 US Open 9-ball finale, Appleton defeated another US bet Corey Deuel in the finals.
On the road to the finals, Appleton beat Filipino-Canadian Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan, 11-7.
Putnam arranged a titular showdown with Appleton after handing the second straight loss of Pagulayan, 11-8. Liberty Icao
