Fly now, avoid Christmas rush

FORMER president Arroyo and her husband, former first gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo, can buy themselves some time to avoid spending Christmas season in jail together by opting to leave the country and seek special medical treatment in Munich, Germany before the end of this month.

This seems a tempting proposition as President Aquino III announced to foreign media this week that his administration will file charges against his predecessor by November this year ranging from plunder to electoral sabotage which are nonbailable offenses.

Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes had even warned that Arroyo and her spouse could be detained without bail before Christmas if the joint Comelec-DOJ panel would find probable cause for purportedly rigging the result of the 2007 elections.

Incidentally, Malacañang is not raising any objection should Mrs. Arroyo decide to seek medical treatment in Germany on humanitarian reasons – and even to stay away for a while.

Besides, the Philippines does not have any extradition treaty with Germany.

While in Germany, Arroyo can avail of the state-of-the-art medical treatment for her hypoparathyroidism, a rare hormonal condition that is said to be hampering her recovery.

There, she and her family can claim they are victims of political persecution and apply for political asylum because they could not get a fair trial under the Aquino administration which seems to be in a rush to put a closure to unresolved corruption cases against the previous administration.

So it would be a matter of days before Mrs. Arroyo, now a congresswoman of Pampanga who is facing at least four plunder charges, would renew her application for a travel authority from House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte to seek treatment for her rare life-threatening disease.

We pray for her immediate recovery and return so that she can face charges hurled against her and be allowed to prove her innocence. When this happens, only then we can finally close this tragic chapter of our political history. (Send comments to fermag34
