Lanete, Semerad share NCAA PoW award
DEFENDING champion San Beda College Red Lions snatched a playoff bonus against Letran Knights last Friday when Garvo Lanete and Anthony Semerad showed their shooting prowess in the second round of the 87th season NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
After helping the Red Lions to nail the last twice-to-beat advantage, Lanete and Semerad shared the ACCEL/3XVI NCAA Press Corps Players of Week award presented by Gatorade.
The Red Lions joined their arch-nemesis San Sebastian on the top two spots of the semifinals together with the incentive when the Mendiola-based squad destroyed the Knights, 84-68.
Lanete scored 28 points while Semerad delivered the crucial baskets to douse Letran’s late rally and extend the Red Lions’ domination over the Knights for the 12th straight time since 2007.
Lanete also had five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block while Semerad, on his second game after returning from calf injury that forced him to sit out a month, finished with 16 points on 5-of-9 field goal shooting.
When Letran trimmed their 20-point deficit to 71-61 with 4:54 remaining in the last period, Semerad cut the rally short with a back breaking triple that he followed with three consecutive free throws.
Lanete drew the finishing touches when he scored five straight points to put away the game.
With the win, San Beda’s 15th in 17 games, the Red Lions are now only down half a game behind San Sebastian, which carries a 16-1 record.
It was the second time this season that two players from the same team shared the weekly plum sponsored by ACCEL and 3XVI and backed by Gatorade since teammates Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva took the citation two months ago. Elech Dawa
