Alex Gonzaga has got the hots yet for Kean Cipriano
THE love story that made famous the love team of the 80s of Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion which led to their marriage and which charmed fans for several years returns not on the silver screen but on TV.
It turned out that the recent press brief of TV5’s latest soap at the spanky Bramante Piazza Clubhouse, Renaissance Tower, Meralco Avenue, Ortigas Center was a déjà vu, a travel back in time with what nearly three decades past behind it?
For one there was in person the original male lead and still dashing Gabby Concepcion with his Katorse female lead looking delectable as ever Dina Bonnevie taking however the role which Sharon Cuneta originated.
Son of the famed chanteuse Carmen Soriano, Lloyd Samartino was ubiquitous and his sparkling eyes riveted about us bringing back the times when the fair-haired boy was then the tinsel town’s toast in the leading production outfit at the time, Agrix Films (think Gabun, Totoy Boogie, etc.) Lloyd looked yummier as ever.
What I remember of Lloyd is he was in the first batch of the first formally organized acting workshop which was instituted by Agrix Film Acting Academy which included among others, Dennis Roldan, Ricky Davao, Efren Reyes, Jr. beauty queen Rosemarie De Vera, Michael and Ricky Sandico, and the former boyfriend of Charo Santos-Concio, Gerry Tolentino who went on to finish his medical studies at UST.
The acting facilitators that time were Directors Laurice Guillen (Kung Mangarap Ka At Magising) and Maryo Delos Reyes (High School Circa ‘65), etc. who got their break from Agrix. Scriptwriter and founder of Circle of Ten Tom Adrales and I organized that trailblazing acting academy on record.
To recall, the ending of the original movie had Gabby and Sharon leading separate lives as in hindi sila nagkatuluyan. This is where Lloyd Samartino comes in as the filthy rich husband of Dina Bonnevie.
Make no mistake, caveat emptor: the TV5 present version is not a remake. It is a sequel mind you, when the estranged lovers Gabby and Sharon in the character of Dina B. crossed paths again after leading unhappy marriage lives of their own.
Here goes the sequel of the movie. Mark (Gabby Concepcion) and Kristine (now por- trayed by Dina Bonnevie) thought that their greatest love was left behind. But as fate would have it, their paths would cross again and the memories they wish to bury resurface.
Mark tries to move on from his sad fate and works his way to become a billionaire investment banker. Kristine, on the other hand, is happily married with two kids, but her picture-perfect life crumbles upon the death of her husband.
As their businesses dwindle and their family stands on the brink of bankruptcy, Kristine’s daughter Andrea (Alex Gonzaga) steps up to save whatever investment was left to them. Despite the tremendous responsibility she has to bear for her family, she derives motivation and inspiration from Jason (Kean Cipriano), a struggling musician who loves her with all his heart.
Parenthetical, di kaya sisiklab muli ang dating maalab ngunit naunsyaming pagtitinginan ng dalawa sa isa’t isa? To which Alex Gonzaga, quipped somehow defensively to one and all, “Hindi, ayaw ni Mommy Pinty (her mom). Reading between the lines, the subtext of Alex is, “if it comes to that why not?” Has still got the hots yet?
Back to the storyline. Upon the advice of their relatives, Andrea decides to sell their company to an investor who would be interested in resuscitating the business.
Unknown to Andrea, the man interested in buying their company is Mark, an old flame of her mother and her one great love.
This starts another chapter in the lives of Mark and Kristine. As love blossoms between their children – Mark’s son Paul (AJ Muhlach) and Kristine’s other daughter Candice (Nadine Lustre) – they move heaven and earth to keep them apart.
However, Paul and Candice struggle to fight for the love despite all odds.
Completing the cast of the soap are Candy Pangilinan, Cheska Inigo, Michael Flores, Say Alonzo, Jaycee Parker, Melissa Mendez, Nikki Bacolod, Al Chris Galura, Sarah Polvereni and Cogie Domingo, with the special participation of Lloyd Samartino.
Directed by Robert Quebral and Elaine Lozano, it is co-produced by TV5 and Viva TV. It airs Monday to Friday after “Glamorosa” starting November 21 on TV5.
