Cop mobbed to death by family of wanted man

A POLICEMAN was mobbed and shot to death by the family of a wanted person he was trying to arrest in Iloilo City on Monday afternoon (November 28).

Initial reports reaching the operations center in Camp Crame identified the police officer killed in line of duty as PO1 Angelo Catiponan, 31, of Iloilo City Police Office.

The reports said the incident took place at around 3 p.m. Monday while Catipon was serving a warrant of arrest for frustrated homicide charges against Jeffrey Cason in Brgy. Buntatala, Jaro.

While serving the warrant of arrest, Catiponan was mobbed by Wilfredo Cason, 62, Jerry Bordon, 38, and an alias “Gabot Jacusalem” – all relatives of the suspect.

Catiponan’s attackers were allegedly drunk when the incident took place, the reports said.

The reports said Angelo and Wilfredo Cason then forcibly took Catiponan’s service pistol and shot the policeman several times.

The policeman sustained several gunshot wounds in different parts of his body and was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival by attending physician.

Police said the suspects were arrested but Jacusalem managed to escape and is now the subject of a manhunt, reports said. Anthony Vargas
