Mandaluyong, 2 others share lead in Inter-Cities
TANAUAN CITY – Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio clinched his second win in three games today to keep Mandaluyong on top with two other teams after three rounds in the 2011 National Inter-Cities and Municipalities Championship at the Tanauan Event Center here.
Mandaluyong crushed Davao City, 3.5-0.5, with Antonio, David Elorta and Francis Glen Panes getting the full point against their respective rivals and Jose Vito Tapulgo settling for a draw.
Antonio toppled International Master Oliver Makiling; Elorta drubbed Reggie Olay; and Panes topped Vincent Umayan. Tapulgo split the point with Harrison Maamo.
Bacolod Negros NICA and Tandag City also kept their winning run intact to match Mandaluyong’s output of six points. Bacolod beat Tanauan Medical City, 3-1, while Tandag halted the two-game winning streak of Quezon City-Department of Agrarian Reform with a 3.5-5 victory.
Sharing fourth to seventh places with five points were Quezon City, San Juan City B, Tagaytay City and Tanauan City (Faith).
The event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) is using the match point format where a win is equivalent to two points and a draw is equivalent to one point.
The top four teams after the Swiss System elimination will advance to the crossover semifinals with the no. 1 team going up against the no. 4 team and the no. 2 team colliding with the no. 3 team.
