Mariano, Cristobal, Marce kampeon sa Ateneo Chess tourney

DINOMINA nina International Master (IM) candidate Nelson “Elo” Mariano III ng Bacoor, Cavite, Paulo Cristobal ng Manila at Jasper Marce ng Sta. Rosa City ang kani-kanilang dibisyon sa katatapos na 8th Dr. Jose Sr. Chess Festival na ginanap nitong Linggo sa Ateneo Grade School Cafeteria sa Katipunan, Quezon City.

Si Mariano III,  top board player ng University of the East at younger brother nina GM Nelson at WIM Cristine Rose ay nakalikom ng 5.5 points sa six grueling rounds para makopo ang college division.

Nakaungos siya kina Roldan Oriendo ng Polytechnic University of the Philippines at Narquingel Reyes ng College of St. Benilde na tumapos ng second at third, ayon sa pagkakasunod na may tig 5.0 points. Si Narquingden Reyes na taga-CSB din ay nasa fourth place.

Sa high school division, si Cristobal na taga San Sebastian College ang hari na may total 5.5 points matapos magkasya sa tabla ang last match niya kay second placer Melwyn Baltazar ng Calderon High School. Nasa third place si Carlo Caranyagan ng Arellano University na sinundan naman nina Jose Castro, Kyz Llantada ng AU, at Daryl Samantila ng Adamson ayon sa pagkakasunod.

Tampok naman sa grade school division si Marce na may perfect 6.0 points. Nakabuntot naman si Andrew Sopungco ng Lourdes School of Mandaluyong na may 5.5 points. Magkasalo sa 3rd hanggang 10th placers na may tig 5.0 points matapos ang tiebreak ay sina Kianjoo Macapagal ng LICS na nakuha ang third place honors kasunod nina Stephen Pangilinan ng PACO, Dennis Guttierez III ng SMC, at Israelito Rilloraza ng Las Piñas.

May special awards din kina John Michael Castillo ng Espiritu Santo Parochial School (Top Under 6 player), John Rhuiz Bravo (Top Under 8 Player), Benjamin Ang (Top Under 10 Player), Denise Lapuz of SPCP (Top Under 10 Girl), at Brenna Mae Membrere ng Ateneo De Manila University (Top Lady – College).  Panalo din bilang Top Ateneo players ay sina Cri Rayos (Top Under 8 – ADMU), at Elijah Derek Pilien (Top Under 10 – ADMU), na bida sa kani-kanilang kategorya.

Mismong si Mr. Jose P. Leviste Jr. (Alumni Team Chairman of the Ateneo Chess Teams), ang nanguna sa closing ceremonies habang sina Mr. Ramon Leviste at Ms. Mara Leviste (AB Soc Sci 2000), grandchildren ng late Jose P. Leviste Sr., ang guest awardees sa awarding ceremony.
