NPA rebel commits suicide rather than being arrested
MANILA, Philippines – A suspected communist rebel opted to commit ‘suicide’ rather than be arrested by the authorities on late Monday afternoon near a police checkpoint in Batangas, police reports said Tuesday.
Reports reaching Camp Crame’s operations center, said that the body of Hernando Villarin, an alleged New People’s Army (NPA) member, was found inside a vehicle near a police checkpoint in Brgy. San Rafael, Sto. Tomas, Batangas.
Villarin sustained a lone gunshot wound in the head when authorities discovered his body at the back of a Toyota Grandia van at the said place at around 3:45pm Monday at teh said place, reports said.
The reports that elements of the Sto. Tomas municipal police office has received information that a NPA member was about to pass at the said area, prompting them to put-up a checkpoint.
At around 3:40 pm. Toyota Grandia was flagged down by authorities, with the former Mayor of Alaminos town, Samuel Bueser and his driver alighting from the said van leaving Villarin behind, the reports said.
The reports added that when police called on Villarin to step out the vehicle, a single gunshot was heard and his lifeless body was discovered on the passenger seat.
Police have ruled it as “suicide” as the gunshot was heard after the former mayor and his driver alighted from the vehicle, while a caliber 45 pistol was recovered inside the vehicle, the reports said.
