PNP: ‘Undas is generally peaceful’
THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday said that this year’s observation of “Undas” remain peaceful despite of several recorded incidents that resulted to the death of three persons, including the father of international singing sensation Charice Pempengco.
PNP Spokesman, Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz, Jr., said that the police, which have been on full alert since Friday, October 28, have recorded a total of nine violent incidents during this year’s observation of “Undas.”
“As of the moment.. “Undas” commemoration is generally peaceful as millions of our citizens trooped to the cemeteries nationwide to give honor to our departed love ones,” Cruz told reporters in a press briefing.
For the past three days, the police have monitored nine incidents composed of six vehicular accidents, one fire incidents, one robbery and one drowning incident resulting to three deaths and injury to scores of others.
The PNP spokesman said that around 45,000 police personnel have been deployed in various cemeteries nationwide to ensure peace and order and security of people that are paying their respect to their dead.
“Thousands more were conducting checkpoints, foot and mobile patrols and manning motorist assistant points or marshals – we are providing security and public safety service with other government agencies,” Cruz said.
The offset the police shortage in manpower, the PNP spokesman said that they have also tapped the services of 16 non-governmental organizations and civic groups as force multipliers in keeping peace during “Undas.”
“The PNP will remain o full alert to assist citizens going back to Metro Manila and other urban areas,” Cruz said.
The PNP spokesman said that manhunt operations are still ongoing against the man who stabbed to death Ricky Pempengco, father of Glee star and international singing sensation, Charice.
Ricky Pempengco was stabbed to death by an old enemy with a 12 inch ice-pick shortly before Monday midnight while he was buying a cigarette at a store on Bonifacio St., Barangay Laram in San Pedro town in Laguna.
