Pokwang sinulot kay Ai-Ai ang Guinness Grand Champion for Hair and Make-up
ONE of the highlights that president and CEO of Hair Asia Evelyn Alvaran-Cruz recently showcased in her state-of-the art Spectacular Salon 2011 at the World Trade Center, Pasay was the portion in which hairdresser and make-up artist non-pareil Jackie Rivera (the unchallenged champion yet of the Guinness Book of World Records for the Tallest Hairstyle for Women in 2000) showcased his twenty models or so sashaying and sporting his work of art on their crowning glories on Alvaran-Cruz’ yet breathtaking runway with actress/comedienne Pokwang no less in the finale portion. Bravo!
We found out that all through these years, the genius and artist in Jackie Rivera is behind Pokwang’s luminous beauty that takes into account hair-dress, make-up and even styling of her costumes on TV. In a way, the Guinness Book of World Records’ title holder is Pokwang’s best kept secret at ABS-CBN’s most enviable playing field for that beguiling and ethereal look on the small screen.
Before Pokwang, Rivera was doing Comedy Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas on several of her shows on TV until perhaps he was pirated I supposed (just speculating hahaha!) Kaya naman pala extrambotic and nice as in entertaining to look at ang mga looks as well as getups nina Ai-Ai and Pokwang dahil Guinness Book of World Records champion lang naman pala ang may hawak sa kanila.
Has he got no plans to make a name for himself in the beauty industry considering that he has a good track record to back him up if and when? “In the immediate future perhaps, pero ayaw muna ni Pokwang na iwan ko siya. Besides, at the moment kumportable ako sa kanya. Para lang kaming magkakapatid behind the small screen. Wala siyang ka-ere-ere at may full trust siya sa trabaho ko,” disclosed the self-effacing Jackie Rivera.
Backstage at the aforementioned and most hard to top Hair Asia event and amidst the glare of TV cameras of paparazzi capturing the highly unique and super-bongga hairdo, makeup and most dramatic outfit of the comedienne of the hour, I got to pin Pokwang down for some questions like if she was going to do her “patagilid” act of walking on the ramp to elicit the usual laughter from the audience as she was wont to doing when she was but a struggling standup comic/singer and host trying to make a name at Daddy Wowee’s Music Box at Timog, Quezon City, the oldest and most durable comedy bar in the country. (Now, do I see the resident artists Danjosh and the queen without a throne Inang Sonny Pinca raising their eyebrows at the mere mention of Pokwang’s name, why?).
Pokwang was a bit tickled saying, “Ay di muna ngayon because pa-legit fashion model kuno ako ngayon. Baka matilian ako ni Madir Jackie hahaha!”
If you still don’t know, Jackie Rivera comes from a dirt poor family from a God-forsaken Tawi-Tawi, Sulu. He graduated with a degree in Education from Mindanao State University. For awhile he taught grade school pupils in Tawi-Tawi.
Pinag-praktisan pa nga raw niyang gupitan ang kanyang mga estudyante dahil wala raw talagang hair salon o barber shop sa kanilang lugar.
It came to pass that he had to leave Tawi-Tawi for the greener pasture. He never had any formal training in haircutting or experience in apprenticeship as well. His first foray into hairdressing competition was at a hair show in Manila, his baptism of fire so-called in which he won 35 thousand pesos as prize for being the grand champion. The prize saw him putting up his own beauty parlor at Maria Clara St., Dapitan, Manila which is counting an ample lot of customers up to the present time.
Under the auspices of Evelyn Alvaran-Cruz, Rivera was able to perform at Albert Hall, London met and leveled up with the world’s top beauty icon Vidal Sassoon. On record, Rivera has stashed 67 championship awards, 13 of which were awards for grand championship.
Some of these awards were earned in competitions in key cities of Asia. Nothing beats yet his title given him by Guinness. Not one less you bet!
