Three rebels dead as troops overrun rebel encampment in Cotabato
THREE suspected New People’s Army (NPA) were killed after government troops overran a rebel encampment in a jungle village in North Cotabato province on Sunday afternoon, a military official said.
Colonel Leopoldo Galon, spokesman for the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) said that the encounter took place at around 1:320pm in Sitio Illitasan in Brgy. Biangan, Makilala town, North Cotabato.
Galon said troops from the 57th Infantry Battalion were conducting a combat patrol operations in the area when it stumbled upon a rebel encampment with 30 rebels.
A firefight ensued between both sides lasting for 30 minutes and resulting to the killing of three rebels and wounding several others, the military official said.
Galon said no casualty were reported on the government sides while troops recovered three bodies, two M14 and two M16 rifles belonging to the rebels during clearing operations at the encounter site.
The military official said that additional troops were sent in the area to conduct pursuit operations against the rebels who fled to different directions after the encounter.
