Cebu joins 64th NSBC in Dagupan

CEBU CITY – University of Cebu (UC), the back-to-back champion in the Cebu Sports Athletic Foundation Inc (CESAFI) senior men’s basketball tournament, will see action in the 64th National Students Basketball Championship (NSBC) competitions in Dagupan City, Pangasinan from February 27 to March 3.

This was confirmed by CESAFI Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy and UC Manager Atty. Baldomero Estenzo during a meeting held at the Cebu Golf Country Club with the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) Secretary General Graham C. Lim.

The NSBC, which is also known as the National Inter-Secondary and National Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship, is a qualifying tournament to the Asian University Basketball Championship (AUBC) to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in June this year.

According to Lim, arrangements have been made with the host Dagupan City officials for the participation of twelve (12) College Men’s teams and eight (8) High School Men’s teams.

The host of this year’s NSBC is Dagupan City Vice-Mayor Belen Fernandez, who is also the BAP Regional Director of Region-1.

Fernandez is assisted by BAP Region-1 Organizing Committee members Renato “Jack” Vidal, Noel Osting and Seato Gonimil.

Gonimil is the Assistant Secretary General for Luzon in the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), which is recognizing the NSBC as the official qualifier for the Asian University competitions.

Qualifying competitions for the NSBC to be held in Mindanao include those in Davao City, which is being organized by the Davao Sportsmen Inc. led by Judge Jaime Quitain and Leon “Binggoy” G. Montemayor; Zamboanga City, which is run by Elbert “Bong” Atilano and BAP’s Elong Natividad of the Western Mindanao Private Schools Athletic Association; and Cagayan de Oro City, which is organized by Ruel Daba of the PRISAA-SCUAA.

Meanwhile, the qualifying tournaments in the National Capital Region and other regions will get underway at the end of this month.
