Four soldiers wounded in encounter in Bukidnon
MANILA, Philippines – Four soldiers were wounded following a two-hour firefight with communist rebels in a remote village in Bukidnon on Wednesday afternoon, a military official said.
The firefight between troops of the 8th Infantry Battalion and rebels took place at around 3 p.m. in Barangay Overview, Quezon town in Bukidnon, said Major Eugenio Julio Osias, spokesman for the army’s 4th Infantry Division.
The army official said the encounter took place as their troops were pursuing a group of rebels behind the burning of two truckloads of bananas in Kitaotao, Bukidnon earlier that day.
“Our troops were maneuvering for two hours and then they were hit by landmine and this resulted to the wounding of four of our troops,” Osias told defense reporters in a phone interview.
The army official said that Huey helicopter gunship was dispatched to the area to provide air support to their troops engaged in the encounter and airlift the wounded soldiers.
Osias said the encounter between their troops and the rebels are still on-going as of press time.
