Government troops overrun rebel camp in Zambales
MANILA, Philippines – Government troops on Friday have overrun a small communist rebel encampment at a remote village in Masinloc, Zambales following hour long firefight, police and military reports said.
However, no casualties were reported between the two sides in the said encounter that took place at around 10:30 a.m. in Barangay Sta. Rita, Masinloc of said province, reports in Camp Aguinaldo said.
Major Enrico Gil Iletao, spokesman of the army’s 7th Infantry Division (ID) said that the encountered after elements of the 24th Infantry Battalion (IB) checked on the reported presence of armed men in the area.
“Troops responded to a report from civilians that states of extortion activities by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels. This is non-election related violence and our troops overrun a makeshift camp with 12 tents,” Ileto said.
The Commission on Elections scheduled a Special Elections in Zambales on February 4, 2012.
