Garcia, Gomez draw respective matches
INTERNATIONAL Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Grandmaster John Paul Gomez of the Philippines opted to play safe in the sixth round of Group B division of 11th Aeroflot Open Chess Championships 2012 at the Hotel Cosmos in Moscow, Russia on Sunday (February 12).
Garcia, top player of Ateneo de Manila University, settled for a truce with IM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam while the former De La Salle University ace Gomez drew with FIDE Master Rakhim Pasiev of Russia.
Garcia raised his total to 3.5 points, good for a share of 25th to 54th places in the field of 130 players while Gomez pushed his total to 2.0 points for a share of 102nd to 111th places.
GM Emre Can of Turkmenistan toppled GM Alexei Iljushin of Russia for his sixth straight win in as many rounds to maintain solo leadership.
In the seventh round, Garcia will face GM Tejas Bakre of India while Gomez will meet FM Shardul Gagare of Russia.
