National age-group series opens in Sta. Rosa
It will be the first of a series of elimination tournaments nationwide. Supporting the event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) is the city government of Sta. Rosa headed by Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas and city sports coordinator Dennis Aquino.
The tournament, open to all youth chess players aged twenty years old and below, will be divided into the following categories: 20 years & below (boys and girls); 16 years & below (boys and girls); 14 years & below (boys & girls); 12 years & below (boys and girls); 10 years & below (boys and girls); and 8 years & below (boys and girls).
The age-group competition is set on March 1-4 while the juniors event is slated on March 5-8. The top five players from each category will advance to the grand finals in Tanauan City, Batangas on April 23-30.
All age-group leg champions will earn the right to represent the Philippines in the 2012 ASEAN+ Age-Group chess championships in Hue, Vietnam on June 10-20 while the grand final winners will earn the right to represent the Philippines in the 2012 Asian Youth championships in Sri Lanka. The boys and girls junior champions will be the country’s representatives in the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athens, Greece on August 1-16.
