PHL chessers vie in Vietnam
FILIPINO chessers will see action in the 2nd edition of the HD Bank Open Chess Tournament 2012 on March 1-8 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
The Filpino bets competing in the tournament are IM Rolando Nolte (2455) of Quezon City, IM Emmanuel Senador (2357) of Iloilo, NM Edgar Reggie Olay (2361) of Davao-Kidapawan and NM Rhobel Legaspi (2273) of Makati City.
“We hope to do well in this event and get a possible GM norm,” said Nolte, who obtained his first GM norm four years ago during the 3rd Kolkata Open International Grandmasters Chess Tournament in India.
“Most of our players are in good shape right now. They are all well-prepared and better-trained. Sana makakuha ng title norm at ELO rating sila sa Vietnam chess meet,” said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chair-president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, Jr.
Top seed GM Le Quang Liem (2714) and second seed GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (2662) of Vietnam are fancied to win the top prize of $10,000 in this $30,000 tournament.
Other notable woodpushers competing are No.3 GM Ni Hua (2641) of China, No.4 GM Konstantine Shanava (2586) of Georgia, No.5 GM Gopal Geetha Narayanan (2566) of India, No.6 GM Merab Gagunashvili (2560) of Georgia, No.7 GM Li Shilong (2550) of China, No.8 GM Cao Sang (2519) and No.9 GM Dao Thien Hai (2516) of Vietnam and no.10 GM Xiu Deshun of China.
Grandmasters Yu Yangyi and Wen Yang of China shared first place in the 1st HDBank Cup Open 2011.
