Quake death toll is 22 only – NDRRMC
THE government on Tuesday place the official death toll from the strong quake that struck central Visayas and nothern Mindanao on Monday to 22 with scores of others still remain missing.
Most of the fatalities were recorded in Negros Oriental, which is the most badly affected by Monday’s 6.9 magnitude quake traced to unrecorded faultline, officials said.
NDRRMC Executive Director Benito Ramos said this in a phone interview with defense reporters as he debunks earlier reports of 45 deaths by army units in the province.
“I told them that if there’s no body or cadaver… So we insist our official report as of this time is 22 deaths,” Ramos said.
The latest quake fatalities were the seven persons that were rescued earlier by government troops and died while being treated at a hospital.
“May pitong injured na namatay na sa ospital so 22 na ang patay at yan ang opisyal na bilang namin,” Ramos said.
The NDRRMC chief saud that he is now in Negros Island and surveying and assesing the damage brought by Monday’s tremblor.
