UPDATE: Quake death toll now at 26- NDRRMC
MANILA, Philippines – Death toll from the strong quake that shook Central Visayas on Monday noon rose to 26 on Wednesday as rescue operations for the 71 missing persons continues for the third day.
Latest update released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that the 26 recorded fatalities from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake were mostly from Negros Oriental.
The NDRRMC reports said that 13 fatalities were recorded in Guinhulngan City, while four deaths in Jimalalud town, three in La Libertad and one each in the towns of Ayungon, Bais, Bindoy and Tayasan
The reports added that 71 persons still remain missing in Barangay Planas in Guinhulngan City and Brgy. Solonggon in La Libertad town with 52 others were injured due to the earthquake.
The NDRRMC reports added that government troops backed by a team of search and rescue workers from Manila have resumed their search and rescue operations for the reported missing persons.
However, more than a dozen roads and bridges in Negros Oriental were either totally destroyed and or damage by the quake and still remain impassable to almost all type of vehicles hampering rescue efforts, the reports said.
