Army officer killed by NPA sniper in Negros
ONE young army officer was reportedly killed on Tuesday by suspected rebel sniper fire in remote village in Negros Occidental, a known stronghold of communist insurgents, official said.
Initial reports in Camp Aguinaldo said a group of soldiers was ambushed by unknown number of rebels at around 11:40 a.m. in the vicinity of Kawayan town in Negros Occidental.
Major Generam Jose Mabanta, commander of 3rd Infantry Division, said that their troops were returning back to their base from an operation when the ambush took place.
The army official said no firefight were also recorded after the ambush indicating that the enemy were located far away.
“Natsambahan… Katatapos lang ng operation at wala naman firefight na naganap dahil malayo ang kalaban,” Mabanta said.
The army official decline to reveal the name of the slain young officer since they have to notify its first of kin.
