Malacañang addresses PhilPost workers complaint
AFTER an hour-long conference with PhilPost Rank & File Employees Association (PRAFEA) president Manuel Rama, PhilPost Workers Union (PWU) president Tirso Paglicawan and five (5) other employee organization leaders on March 6, 2012 in Malacañang, Undersecretary Ronald A. Geron of the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs (ODESLA) under the Office of the President assured the labor leaders of the immediate preparation of a memorandum directing Postmaster General Josie M. dela Cruz to explain point by point the complaints of anomalies and malpractices against her as cited in a letter to Pres. Benigno Aquino III dated February 17, 2012.
In the course of the labor leaders’ conference with Usec. Geron, the latter confirmed that, indeed, two (2) graft cases have been filed before the Sandiganbayan against PGM Dela Cruz and that this has already been brought to the attention of the President. Usec Geron advised the group to continue gathering documents to substantiate their claims.
The letter to President Aquino accuses PMG Dela Cruz, former governor of the Province of Bulacan, of indiscriminate dismissal without due process of hundreds of PhilPost employees who have been in government service for many years and replacing them with high paying contractual employees, consultants and co-terminous employees most of whom are identified as her own province-mates.
In a rally held last February 24 at the Manila Central Post Office in Liwasang Bonifacio, employees and sympathizers expressed their indignation on the impending mass lay-off on March 31 of more than a thousand employees and on the alleged graft and corrupt practices committed by Dela Cruz’s administration.
The protest action was held while a lavish birthday party was reportedly being held for Dela Cruz for which almost a million pesos was spent for litsong baka and food catering service drawn from the PhilPost coffers to welcome and feed not the PhilPost employees but mostly local and provincial politicians as well as prominent individuals and personalities from Bulacan.
