McIlroy holds off Tiger, becomes new world No. 1
RORY MCILROY held off the late charge of Tiger Woods to win the Honda Classic and become the new No. 1 in the world golf ranking on Sunday (Monday in Manila).
The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland finished the final round with a 1-under par 69 for an aggregate of 12-under 268, two shots clear of Woods and Tom Gillis.
Woods, the only player younger than McIlroy to become the world’s top ranked golfer at 21 back in 1997, shot a final round 8-under 62 to finish at 10-under 270.
He birdied the 17th and eagled the 18th put pressure on McIlroy, but the latter responded with some clutch putts to maintain the lead and replace Luke Donald on top of the world ranking. Noli Cruz
