Pascua, Frayna top Luzon leg of National Juniors
FIDE Master Haridas Pascua escaped from losing position and forced a draw opposite Jerad Docena to win the Luzon leg of the 2012 National Juniors Chess Championships at the Public Market Complex in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Pascua and Docena finished with similar 4.0 points, but the former emerged with higher tiebreak points.
Also advancing into the grand finals slated in Tanauan, Batangas on April 23-30 are National Master Mari Joseph Turqueza (3rd), Alexis Emil Maribao (4th) and McDominique Lagula (5th).
Meanwhile, Woman National Master Janelle Mae Frayna solidified her status as one of the country’s top junior players by winning the title in the distaff side. She defeated Jesca Docena in the final round to finish with 4.5 points, half-point ahead of Shania Mae Mendoza.
Frayna, the reigning national junior champion in the girls division and gold medalist in the 2011 ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships in Tarakan, Indonesia, is projected to become the country’s first woman grandmaster.
She finished 22nd overall in last year’s World Juniors in Chennai, India.
Joining Frayna in the grand finals were Mendoza (2nd), Woman FIDE Master Marie Antoinette San Diego (3rd), Michelle Yaon (4th) and Gladys Hazel Romero (5th).
The Mindanao leg dubbed as the Gov. Oscar S. Moreno 2012 National Age Group and Juniors Chess Championships is the next stop of the event. It is slated on March 24-31 in Misamis Oriental.
