In a petition to the Commission on Higher Education, San Beda College, through its Board of Trustees led by Chairman Dr. Manuel V. Pangilinan, wrote that the Archbishop deserves this honor from the school for he embodies San Beda College’s ideals of Fides (Faith), Virtus (Virtue), and Scientia (Knowledge).
FIDES. Archbishop Tagle is a person whose unwavering faith in the Most Blessed Trinity, the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, and devotion to the Virgin Mary, the Most Holy Mother of God, has guided his ministry as priest and bishop in the Diocese of Imus. And now as the Archbishop of Manila, the same faith will empower him in shepherding his new flock. Prayer has been and will always be the highest expression of one’s commitment in the Catholic Faith.
As a man of prayer, Archbishop Tagle has made faith as the very foundation of his ministry in the Church of Christ founded upon the Apostles.
Archbishop Tagle is an Elected Member of the Council of the Synod of Bishops, Vatican, from 2005-present. He is also currently a Member of the Office of Theological Concerns, FABC, and Chairperson of the Episcopal Commission on the Doctrine of the Faith, CBCP.
VIRTUS. Archbishop Tagle’s love for the poor and the less fortunate drives him to work selflessly as a priest and bishop. His genuine concern for the poor also forms his theological teachings, ever anchoring the sufferings of man in the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Moreover, evangelization lies at the very heart of the Archbishop’s ministry as a servant of Jesus Christ. Archbishop Tagle believes that only in living out the virtues taught in the Gospels authentically can one effectively evangelize others. When the Pondo ng Pinoy Community Foundation was put up in 2005, then Bishop Tagle of Imus was called upon to head its Programs Committee and was part of the foundation’s board from 2005-2011. As the Archbishop of Manila, he becomes chair of Pondo ng Pinoy.
SCIENTIA. Archbishop Tagle has never waned in his search for the Truth. A holder of a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Catholic University of America, his devotion to push the boundaries of theological knowledge during his postgraduate work was attested by his dissertation adviser, the well- respected theologian Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph A. Komonchak. As a theologian of first rank, Archbishop Tagle worked as a member of the International Theological Commission, advising the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
He has also demonstrated his theological expertise when he worked in the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Asia in 1998, and presently in his capacity as Chairman of the Episcopal Commission on the Doctrine of the Faith.
Archbishop Tagle is considered the consummate teacher and communicator, explaining with clarity, talking about theology with a smiling face and unfettered language in the halls of colleges and universities as well as through the mass media. Through all of the countless recognitions bestowed on him, Archbishop Tagle remains steadfast on that one STAR: “It is the Lord who is the star with the everlasting light, dazzling brilliance, and magnificent flame.” Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle continues to say, “It is the Lord!”
Let us follow Him and recognize Him in one another!
