Upsets mar opening round of National Juniors

ALEXIS EMIL MARIBAO held top seed FIDE Master Haridas Pascua into a draw after 62 moves of Maroczy Bind Sicilian Defense as upsets marred the opening round of 2012 National Juniors Chess Championships Luzon leg at the 2nd floor, Public Market Complex in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.

Local bet Jasper Marce also drew with reigning national junior champion National Master Mari Joseph Turqueza after 64 moves of Queen’s Pawn Opening.

In the distaff side, Far Eastern University junior player Enrica Villa stunned second seed Woman FIDE Master Marie Antoinette San Diego.

Other opening day winners were NM Alcon John Datu, Lennon Hart Salgados, McDominique Lagula, Jan Francis Mirano, Jerad Docena, Paul Robert Evangelista and Daryl Unix Samantila in the boys category and Woman National Master Janelle Mae Frayna, Shania Mae Mendoza, Gladys Hazel Romero, Michelle Yaon.

The Mindanao leg of the event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by Chairman/President Prospero “Butch” Pichay will be held in Misamis Oriental on March 24-31. The Mindanao swing of the trilogy will be dubbed as Gov. Oscar S. Moreno National Age-Group and Juniors Chess Championships. Noli Cruz
