Favorites flex muscle in age group tourney
THE favorites flexed their muscles heading into the homestretch of the 2012 National Age Group Chess Championships Visayas leg at the Gov. Cabagnot Training Center in Kalibo, Aklan.
Joel Pimentel of St. Benilde Bacolod remained perfect after four rounds to lead by a full point in the Open Under-20. Also going undefeated in four games were FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina of Pasay in the OU-14 and Emmanuel Van Paler of Manila in the OU-10.
Vince Angelo Medina of Far Eastern U was also alone on top in OU-16 with 3.5 points.
Chris Pondoyo and Joshua Tan shared the lead in OU-12 with 3.5 points while Gil Casa, Jr. of Iloilo, Adrian de Luna of Guimarasand Alekhine Nouri of Negros Occidental scored 3.0 points each to set pace in OU-8.
In the distaff side, Samantha Glo Revita of Pangasinan led her closest pursuers by 1.5 points in the Girls Under-14. Also separating themselves from their respective rivals were Woman National Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda of La Salle in GU-20 and Bernadette Galas of Makati in GU-16.
The category winners will represent the country in the ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships in Hue, Vietnam while the top five from each category will advance to the grand finals in Tanauan, Batangas on April 23-30. Noli Cruz
