Laz stuns Fronda in national juniors
CHRISTINE JOYCE LAZ of University of Santo Tomas stunned Woman National Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda of De La Salle in the second round of the 2012 National Juniors Chess Championships Visayas leg at the Cabagnot Training Center in Kalibo, Aklan.
With the win, the Laz joined five others on top of the standings and put a damper in Fronda’s bid of winning the tournament for players below 20 years old.
Another UST bet Loraine Salinas also shocked fourth seed Samantha Glo Revita to notch her second win in a row.
The other leaders were Jean Karen Enriquez of Adamson, Woman FIDE Master Marie Antoinette San Diego of Cavite, Gladys Romero of Far Eastern U and Judith Pineda of De La Salle.
Second seed WFM Cherry Ann Mejia was held to a draw by Adelaide Joie Lim of Bacolod, but was very much in the hunt with 1.5 points.
There were little surprises in the Open division.
Visayas Age Group Open Under-20 champion Joel Pimentel of St. Benilde led the onslaught of the favorites by beating Franz Robert Grafil of De La Salle to remain perfect after two games.
Lone female entry and last year’s national junior girls champ WNM Janelle Mae Frayna of FEU joined Pimentel and five others on top with a victory over Baltazar Rafales, Jr.
Also with two points were McDominique Lagula of Nueva Viscaya, who crushed Jeazzir Kline Surposa of General Santos; Vince Angelo Medina of Cavite, who dismantled Paul Benjamin Casiano of Bulacan; Paul Robert Evangelista of Pangasinan, who thrashed Sean Andrew Olan of Sta. Rosa; Jose Castro of FEU-FERN, who downed Marc Christian Nazario of Quezon City; and Jude Emil Fronda of UST, who scalped Normel Benigno De Jesus of Bulacan.
Former national junior champion and second seed FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina settled for a draw with local bet Jan Francis Mirano for 1.5 points, the same output of National Master Joey Albert Florendo of UST, who drew with Chester Jason Coquilla of Misamis Oriental.
The brief opening ceremonies of the competition was highlighted by the turnover of 30 chess sets and two giant demonstration boards from the National Chess Federation of the Philippines represented by Executive Director Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales to the Province of Aklan thru Provincial Sports Director FA Wilfredo Neri.
