Olongapo’s Spes

THE partnership between the local government units and the Department of Labor and Employment  has turned beneficial to poor but deserving students who have transformed their vacation into worthwhile endeavors as they earn handsome amount which they use to spend for their education, thus effectively helping their parents in that way.

The project, which has been in practice by most LGUs all over the country during summer time, is part of the government’s Special Program for Employment of Students and is something that this writer is happy about as he sees the benefits the youths especially from the poor sector can get.

Like for example in Olongapo City, some 250 deserving students landed summer jobs and started working in the city’s various departments and offices through the SPES.

These students aged 15 to 21 years old would report at their respective workplaces from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to complete the 176 SPES required hours. The beneficiaries will finish their 22 days of summer training on May 11.

City Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr. is saying: ‘’Every year, the city government carries out this program to help needy but deserving students pursue their high school and college studies.”

Advising the SPES beneficiaries to do their jobs well and make the most out of the opportunities given to them, Mayor Gordon, nevertheless, reminds them that said employment is just for the summer vacation and that students “should always prioritize their studies because their college diplomas will be soon be their tickets to better opportunities.”

Education, by the way, is just one of Mayor Gordon’s primary agenda in his HELPS (Health, Education & Environment, Labor & Livelihood, Peace and Order, Social Services and Sports) program.
