Pascua keeps solo lead in national juniors
FIDE Master Haridas Pascua continued to hold sway in the 2012 National Age Group and National Juniors Chess Championships at the Event Center in Tanauan, Batangas.
The pride of Pangasinan took the scalp of Jan Francis Mirano of Aklan in the fifth round to remain perfect with 5.0 points, a full point ahead of his closest pursuers in the junior men’s division.
Defending champion Mari Joseph Turqueza of Quezon City kept Pascua in sight with a victory over Franz Robert Grafil of Valenzuela. He shared second place with Bacolod bet Joel Pimentel, Jr., who was held to a draw by Vince Angelo Medina of Cavite.
The champions in the junior men’s and women’s will represent the country in the 2012 World Junior Chess Championships in Athens, Greece.
There were slight changes on top of the standings in age group competitions.
Daniel John Lemi of Vigan and Haince Patrick de Leon of Marikina beat separate rivals to share the lead in the boys under-12 as erstwhile pacesetter Romeo Canino of Misamis Oriental fell to Adrian Basil Basilgo of Mandaue.
Dennis Gutierrez of Pangasinan took solo lead in BU-10 following his victory over Cris John Paul Ursua of Aklan.
In the distaff side, Samantha Glo Revita of Pangasinan and Shania Mae Mendoza of Sta. Rosa remained perfect in the girls under-14 although the former had played one more game; Alexis Anne Osena of Quezon led Allanney Jia Doroy of Agusan by half-point in GU-12; and Me Ann Joy Baclayon of Misamis Oriental and Regyne Palaming of Pangasinan kept their unblemished records intact in GU-10.
