Visaya leg of age group tilt unfolds in Aklan
THE third and final leg of the qualifying for the 2012 National Age Group Chess Championships unfolded yesterday (April 7) with the opening ceremonies at the Gov. Corazon Cabagnot Training Center in Kalibo, Aklan.
A total of 167 players from different provinces are bidding to get a slot in the grand finals of the event organized and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
The Visayas leg of the prestigious age group competition is hosted and sponsored by Aklan headed by Gov. Carlito S. Marquez.
The top five players in each category will book a seat in the grand finals slated on April 23-30 in Tanauan, Batangas.
Category winners will also earn berths to the ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships in Hue, Vietnam.
Among the fancied players in the event are Joel Pimentel (U-20); Vince Angelo Medina (U-16); FM Paulo Bersamina (U-14); Istraelito Rilloraza (U-12); Dennis Gutierrez III (U-10); and Alekhine Nouri (U-8).
The top contenders in the distaff side are WNM Jan Jodilyn Fronda, Mikee Charlene Suede and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia in U20; Jean Karen Enriquez and Jazelle Villarin in U16; Samantha Glo Revita U-14); Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem (U-12); and Cristine Delos Reyes (U-10).
The category champions in the grand finals will represent the country in the Asian Youth Chess championships in Sri Lanka on June 24–July 4. Noli Cruz
