Farmers group urges SC to stand by Luisita decision
THE militant peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) today warned of President Aquino’s dictatorial tendencies saying that an Aquino-controlled judiciary and the administration’s inability to address the people’s economic sufferings could “pave the way” for a dictatorship.
The KMP also dared the Supreme Court justices and whoever will be the next chief justice to stand firm on their recent decision ordering the total land distribution of Hacienda Luisita.
“While we welcome the decision of the impeachment court as a signal to all government officials to disclose their assets, the next step should be for Aquino and his cabinet to sign their respective waivers and open their bank accounts and assets to the people’s scrutiny,” says KMP deputy secretary general Randall Echanis.
Echanis expressed fears that Renato Corona’s ouster from the highest post of the judiciary would now lead to an Aquino-controlled Supreme Court.
“An Aquino-controlled judiciary, coupled with his inability to address worsening the economic crisis, the growing landlessness, joblessness, and poverty suffered by the people, could pave the way for an Aquino dictatorship,” Echanis, also the chairperson of Anakpawis party-list, said.
“We call on the people to remain vigilant and frustrate the President’s dictatorial tendencies,” he said.
The peasant leader also warned that the President’s relatives, the Cojuangco-Aquinos, will surely take advantage of their control over the Supreme Court and would maneuver to reverse its decision on Hacienda Luisita.
“The Supreme Court should stand firm by its decision on Hacienda Luisita. A barefaced reversal of the Supreme Court decision on Hacienda Luisita would be highly unacceptable to the Filipino peasantry,” Echanis said.
The KMP earlier said that “the valuation issue of Hacienda Luisita could bring the issue back to the Supreme Court and might even outlive the bogus Carper and the Aquino regime.”
The KMP also challenged Aquino to jail former President Arroyo and punish human rights violators. “Now that Renato Corona is out, there are no more excuses for Aquino not to send Arroyo behind bars immediately.
Aquino’s failure to decisively send Arroyo to jail will expose his continuing political accommodation being extended by his administration to plunderers and human rights violators,” Echanis said.
