Bersamina, Pimentel win gold in ASEAN age-group chess tilt
FIDE MASTER Paulo Bersamina lived up to his billing by winning the gold medal in the Open Under-14 division of the 13 ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Vietnam.
After playing catch-up in the early rounds, the top-seeded Bersamina piled up the wins down the stretch to tally 7.5 points and win by a full point over Minh Hieu Pham of Vietnam and Jodi Setyaki Azarya of Indonesia. He defeated Ahuja Rohan of India in the ninth and final round.
Joel Pimentel scored a critical ninth round win over Bhakti Kulkarni of India to snatch the gold in OU-20. He finished in a tie for first with Firman Syah Farid of Indonesia and FM Tuan Minh Tran of Vietnam with 7.0 points, but emerged victorious with superior tiebreak.
Austin Jacob Literatus wasn’t as lucky in the tiebreak, settling for silver after finishing in a tie for first with FM Tuan Minh Le of Vietnam at 7.0. Stephen Rome Pangilinan also took the podium with a silver medal finish in OU-10.
