Dimakiling, Fronda lead qualifiers in National Open grand finals
INTERNATIONAL Master Oliver Dimakiling defeated fellow IM Rolando Nolte to top the 2012 National Open chess championship semifinals at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) canteen in Vito Cruz, Manila.
Dimakiling finished with 8.0 points in nine rounds, a full point clear of reigning national junior champion FIDE Master Haridas Pascua, who toppled IM Emmanuel Senador.
Also advancing in the men’s grand finals were FM Roderick Nava, FM Randy Segarra, Senador and Giovanni Mejia. They will be joined by the 12 Filipino grandmasters.
In the distaff side, Woman National Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda halved the point with Eden Tumbos to lead seven others in the grand finals. She finished with 7.0 points in nine rounds.
Also moving on were Bernadette Galas, Woman FIDE Master Marie Antoinette San Diego and Jean Karen Enriquez, who finished with similar 6.0 points and Mikee Charlene Suede, Shania Mae Mendoza, Akiko Sharmaine Suede and Tumbos, who managed 5.5 points each.
The grand finals of the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in coordination with PSC will determine the country’s representatives to the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey in August. Noli S. Cruz
