DSWD-NCR (Legarda) facelift
AFTER few censures on the DSWD-National Capital Region in Legarda, Manila by the publisher of Remate and National Press Club President, Benny Antiporda, and by this columnist in response to various complaints of patients and their relatives regarding its procedures and systems, I recently witnessed how things have changed for the better in terms of physical arrangements, queuing, interviewing and human relations.
The Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) of the DSWD is the office that handles the requests for assistance of individuals and families needing medical, social and psychological services.
It is a 24-hour action center where DSWD personnel process mostly Guarantee Letters (GLs) from congressmen and senators who allocate part of their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) for financial, burial, medical and similar assistance. It also provides immediate psycho-social intervention and referral services to link the clients with the appropriate service units in the Department, other government agencies, NGOs and other organizations. Likewise, it provides temporary accommodation or shelter for a limited period of time.
Recently when I brought my GL to DSWD Legarda for educational assistance from Senator Koko Pimentel (thank you, Sir!), I have noticed not only improvements in the waiting time, physical arrangements, and comfort of facilities, but have also become aware of the always ignored reality that the DSWD staff are themselves people with similar, if not more important needs.
I have become friends with the very accommodating staff of CIU, who I have then realized, fully understand what the people they serve are going through because they themselves are experiencing the same problems and are in need of similar assistance.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cristy Calinog, who is now on her second week of absence from work to attend to her daughter who had an operation for ectopic pregnancy; Silvestre Reyes, who was recently hospitalized for a prostate and heart ailment; Anna Babao; Aries Villanueva; and the rest of the CIU staff at DSWD Legarda. Mabuhay po kayo!
