Sharapova wins French Open, completes career GS
MARIA SHARAPOVA captured the only Grand Slam title that eluded her before her career took a nosedive a few years ago due to a series of injuries.
The Russian stunner defeated Sara Errani of Italy, 6-3, 6-2, to capture the French Open title and complete her collection of Grand Slam hardware.
After winning the final point, Sharapova went down on her knees to celebrate not only the victory, but the vindication of all the hard works she put up in her comeback.
Sharapova, who was guaranteed of moving to No. 1 in the rankings regardless of the result, jumped to a quick 4-0 lead against the 21st-seeded Errani, who was in her first Grand Slam final.
But Errani battled back and forced longer rallies before Sharapova’s bigger serve and sharper ground strokes wore her down.
Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008. Noli S. Cruz
