SENATOR Miriam Defensor Santiago declined the nomination to replace Renato Corona as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court citing her pending assignment to sit as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Santiago made the right decision for herself. Based on her actuations during Corona’s impeachment trial, it seems to me that the lady lawmaker has a very low estimation of the capabilities of the lawyers in our country. She might suffer hypertension if she is to sit at the high tribunal dealing with what she says are “stupid lawyers.” Santiago apparently is better off in The Hague where she will hob-knob with non-stupid “professionals.”

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III finally left the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). He is better off working alone than be with people he cannot trust.
Although as an independent candidate his chances of winning now seem shaky but it appears that he could join the Liberal Party senatorial slate as a guest candidate.
Pimentel cannot champion the politics of change if he is working with people resistant to new ideas. They all missed the point by urging Pimentel to remain with UNA for the sake of unity. There can be no unity in the absence of any respect.
Pimentel said he cannot stay with UNA because of Juan Miguel Zubiri. He always contended that Zubiri knew of the alleged plot to rig the 2007 senatorial election.
As a result, Zubiri was able to occupy a Senate seat until last year when a witness, former election supervisor Lintang Bedol, surfaced and confirmed what was publicly known all along – that there was cheating in Maguindanao in 2007.
But before an investigation could be conducted, Zubiri gave up his seat and Pimentel took over the seat but by then he had missed the first four years of his term.

The Department of Education has started a program making the local dialect the medium of instruction during the early years of learning. It is a long overdue move that would give life to our dying dialects/languages.
Our dialects/languages have suffered long enough from its non-usage in written communications. Hopefully the new DECS program would put an end to this suffering.
Contrary to the claim of doom-sayers the strengthening of our languages will forge a better nation out of us. Language is culture and culture is representative of one’s identity thus we are witnesses to a huge cultural gap/identity crisis between our educated English speaking leaders and the Filipino speaking masses they are sworn to serve. This undeniable gap leads to elitism and anti-Filipino sentiment thus very undemocratic and un-Filipino.
