Youth, student groups launch ‘Waiver Watch’
KABATAAN Party-list, together with different youth and student organizations such as Anakbayan, National Union of Students of the Philippines and College Editors Guild of the Philippines launched the “Waiver Watch” today.
The campaign calls all constitutional and elected officials to sign a waiver against the confidentiality of all their bank deposits.
Kabataan Partylist Rep. Raymond Palatino said the Waiver Watch is part of youth initiatives pushing for social justice.
He said that after the conviction and removal of Chief Justice Renato Corona, the signing of the waiver by these officials is indispensable to the good governance and in ensuring transparency and accountability of the government.
During the press conference, the youth groups also launched the Waiver Watch website (www.waiverwatchPH.com) an online portal in which a listing of all officials who had signed/ not signed the waiver are posted.
At the moment, only a handful of congressmen and senators have signed such waiver, including Sen. Francis Chiz Escudero and progressive partylist representatives such as Palatino and Cong. Teodoro Casino. Pres. Aquino, despite public clamor, still refuses to sign the waiver.
“The waivers are important if we want to prove the government’s sincerity in pushing for transparency. We do not want to be a government of hypocrites,” Palatino said.
