Chiz assures fairness to CJ nominees
Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero assured Monday that the Judicial and Bar Council will exercise utmost fairness and probity in choosing the next Supreme Court chief justice even some of the nominees are known ally of President Benigno Aquino III.
“We will be fair to every nominees even to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, or to anybody known to President Aquino,” Escudero said in a text message.
Escudero, ex-officio member of the JBC as chairman of Senate committee on justice and human rights, also said that there will be more extension on the deadline today, July 2, for the submission or acceptance of nominations.
“There will be no more extensions and we have to submit the short list to the President on or before August 28 kaya Malabo nang maisama sa SONA ang isyu sa bagong CJ,” Escudero said.
President Aquino is going to address the state of the nation on July 23, 2012.
For De Lima, Escudero said that he will ask her on her participation on the impeachment trial of former Chief Justice Renato Corona where she testified.
Escudero also dismissed the allegation that the short list will limited between acting chief Justice Antonio Carpio and De Lima.
“That is not true. Kung ako ang tatanungin, walang magiging epekto ito sa pagpili at tanging aking basehan ang katapatan ng sinuman sa inaasintang posisyon,” Escudero said.
