Group urges recall of 89 centavo water rate hike

THE party list group Anakpawis on Wednesday presses Malacanang to recall the average 89 centavo water rate increase the state regulatory agency Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) had granted to Manila Water Company Inc. and Maynilad Water Services Inc.

Today, some 50 members of the party list group staged a noise barrage in Philcoa in Quezon City to protest the water rate hikes granted by MWSS to Maynilad and Manila Water.

Anakpawis party list vice chaiprerson Fernando Hicap said the granting of increase is not only highly questionable but also extremely deplorable.

“In the name of national interest and public welfare, we strongly demand Malacanang to recall MWSS’ shocking and blood pressure decision granting the petitions for water rate increase of Maynilad and Manila Water. It appears to us the hike was granted to please the campaign contributors of Mr. Aquino in the last May 2010 elections,” the leader said.

The MWSS immediately downplayed the effects of the recent water rate increase  assuring low-income households with minimal consumption will be exempted from higher rates.

It said the increase in water rates of two service providers was due to foreign exchange adjustments.  The MWSS said the adjustment in water rates will be reflected on the September water bill of Maynilad and Manila Water customers.

The group said it will also ask its chapters in Quezon City, Makati, Taguig, Pateros, Marikina, Pasig, San Juan, Mandaluyong, as well as in Manila, Caloocan, Paranaque, Pasay, Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Malabon, Navotas and in the municipalities of Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario in Cavite province to stage protest actions and other forms of resistance against water rate hikes. These areas are covered by concessions given to Manila Water and Maynilad.

The group said they will file a petition before the Supreme Court for an urgent temporary restraining order (TRO) asserting that the hike in Maynilad and Manila Water rates is highly inimical to public interest and people’s welfare.
