Jinggoy files resolution urging Aquino to confer Dolphy as National Artist
SENATE President Pro-Tempore Jinggoy Estrada has filed Senate Resolution No. 815 urging President Benigno Aquino III to bestow upon Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon, Sr., the order of the National Artist Award in honor of his unparalleled dedication and valuable contribution to Philippine film arts.
“The King of Comedy was an icon of the Philippine movie industry who have dedicated more than sixty years of his life as a multi-awarded actor, having portrayed the most varied and challenging roles in all his more than two hundred movies, television and radio shows, and as respected film producer, thus the Award,” Estrada said in the resolution filed Monday.
Estrada said that the Order of National Artist (Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) is the supreme honor and recognition given to notable Filipino artist of having made substantial contributions to the development of Philippine arts in the categories of Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, film and broadcast arts, architecture and historical literature.
“The National Artist Award is a recognition bestowed upon deserving Filipino artists who have helped build a Filipino sense of nationhood through the content and form of their works; have distinguished themselves by pioneering in an ode of creative expression or style, making an impact on succeeding generations of artists, and have created a significant body of works, and/or have consistently displayed excellence in the practice of their art form, enriching expression or style among others,” Estrada explained.
The National Artist Award is conferred by the President upon the recommendation of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
“Dolphy was one of the most enduring and esteemed pillar in the local movie industry whose unparalleled dedication to his work and exemplary achievements, as an actor, producer, and philanthropist, has brought joy, laughter, hope and inspiration to the Filipino people amidst various political, economic and socio-cultural eras,” Estrada said.
Dolphy was conferred the Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart, the highest recognition given to a private citizen by the President of the Philippines in 2010.
